Components of a Canada Mailing Address

The country's postal standards are very specific when it comes to how addresses should be written. This helps ensure that letters and packages reach their intended destination as quickly as possible. If an address is written incorrectly, it can cause delays in processing and delivery. In addition, it can look unprofessional.

Generally speaking, the entire address should be written in capital letters (also known as block letters) with no punctuation, except for the hyphen used between the apartment or unit number and street address (i.e., 2-234 Pine St. N). A municipality name should be written next, followed by a province code and 6-character postal code (i.e., ANA NAN).

If you're mailing to someone from another country, it's recommended that you write the recipient's full name on the first line and civic address facts (i.e., a description of the type of delivery, the municipality name, the province code and the postal code) on the second line. You should also include the country name in the final line unless you're sending from Canada, in which case you can omit it.

It's important to know the proper format for Canadian addresses, especially if you work in a company that ships across the border. Knowing the standard Canadian format will help you create professional-looking shipping labels and envelopes. It will also ensure that your mailings are processed properly by the post office and delivered to their intended recipients.
